First steps
Your first 30 days in Istanbul: a checklist
A practical order for the things international students need to do after arriving. Each step links to a detailed guide with the official sources. Tick items off as you go; your progress is saved on this device only.
How to read this guide. Legal requirement marks rules set by Turkish law or an official authority, with a link to the source. Recommendation marks practical advice from this guide, not a legal duty. Needs confirmation marks details we could not fully verify from an official source, or that change often. This is general information, not legal advice.
Deadlines to know from day one
| What | Deadline | Guide |

| General Health Insurance (GSS) | Within three months (apply early: sources count from registration or from the start of the academic year) | Registrations |
| Phone bought abroad | Usable unregistered for 120 days from entry | Registrations |
| Address registration | Within 20 working days of receiving your permit card, and of any move | Rental agreements |

Practical advice
- Recommendation Keep one folder (paper and digital) with your passport copy, visa, admission letter, student certificate, permit application, receipts, lease, and insurance.
- Recommendation Use only official websites and offices. These applications and registrations do not require paid agents.
- Recommendation Ask your international student office early. They see the same questions every term and know your university's process.
- Recommendation Rules and fees change. Check the "last verified" date on each guide and the official source before you pay or sign.
