University registration and enrollment

After you receive an admission letter, you still need to complete final registration (kesin kayıt) at your university. This guide covers the student visa, the documents universities usually ask for, diploma equivalence, and what to do once you are enrolled.

How to read this guide. Legal requirement marks rules set by Turkish law or an official authority, with a link to the source. Recommendation marks practical advice from this guide, not a legal duty. Needs confirmation marks details we could not fully verify from an official source, or that change often. This is general information, not legal advice.

National rules and university rules

There is no single national registration checklist. The official Study in Türkiye portal says the documents "may vary by university and program". Your admission or placement letter is the authoritative list for your case. Marmara University's 2026–2027 guide, for example, says the placement result document lists the registration dates, place, and required documents.

University rule Deadlines are strict. Marmara University's 2026–2027 guide states that candidates who do not register on the announced dates are considered to have given up their place. Check your own university's rule.

Before you travel: the student visa

University rule Istanbul Technical University's 2026–2027 announcement states that a student visa is mandatory both for entry into Türkiye and for registration at ITU.

Needs confirmation Some nationalities may have different visa arrangements. We could not confirm the exceptions from an official page. Ask the Turkish consulate in your country and your university before you travel.

Step by step: final registration

  1. Read your admission or placement letter and note the registration dates, the place (online or in person), and the document list.
  2. Apply for diploma equivalence early if your university requires it (see diploma equivalence).
  3. Get official translations of documents that are not in Turkish or English. ITU, for example, asks for notarised or officially certified Turkish or English translations.
  4. Get your student visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate, and arrive in Istanbul before the registration dates.
  5. Pay tuition if your programme charges it. ITU, for example, states that registration will not be completed without payment and that tuition is non-refundable.
  6. Complete registration on the announced dates, online or at the student affairs office.
  7. Start your residence permit application straight after pre-registration, within your legal stay period (see the residence permit guide).

Your student certificate (öğrenci belgesi)

Once you are enrolled, you can get a student certificate (öğrenci belgesi) from your university, and e-Devlet offers YÖK student-certificate services. You will need it for the residence permit, transport discounts, and other registrations.

Recommendation Request several copies, and check the certificate shows your name exactly as written in your passport.
