Money basics
Build a realistic student budget
Costs change quickly, so start with your own actual expenses instead of relying on a generic monthly estimate.
Use five categories
- Housing: rent, deposit, utilities, and any building fees.
- Food: groceries, campus meals, and occasional eating out.
- Transport: regular journeys and occasional taxis or longer trips.
- Study and phone: course materials, mobile data, and required services.
- Buffer: unexpected expenses and one-off purchases.
Calculate your monthly baseline
Record every expense for 30 days. Separate fixed costs from variable costs, then identify one or two categories where you can realistically reduce spending.
Before paying a deposit
- Confirm the full monthly cost and which bills are included.
- Read the written agreement and understand the deposit refund conditions.
- Verify the landlord or agent and inspect the property before transferring money.
- Keep receipts and written records of payments.
This guide deliberately avoids fixed price claims because costs vary by district, date, and individual circumstances.
