University registration and enrollment
After you receive an admission letter, you still need to complete final registration (kesin kayıt) at your university. This guide covers the student visa, the documents universities usually ask for, diploma equivalence, and what to do once you are enrolled.
How to read this guide. Legal requirement marks rules set by Turkish law or an official authority, with a link to the source. Recommendation marks practical advice from this guide, not a legal duty. Needs confirmation marks details we could not fully verify from an official source, or that change often. This is general information, not legal advice.
National rules and university rules
There is no single national registration checklist. The official Study in Türkiye portal says the documents "may vary by university and program". Your admission or placement letter is the authoritative list for your case. Marmara University's 2026–2027 guide, for example, says the placement result document lists the registration dates, place, and required documents.
University rule Deadlines are strict. Marmara University's 2026–2027 guide states that candidates who do not register on the announced dates are considered to have given up their place. Check your own university's rule.
Before you travel: the student visa
Legal requirement Türkiye's e-Visa is valid only for tourism or commerce. For study, visas are issued by Turkish embassies and consulates (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Study in Türkiye advises applying as soon as you receive your admission letter.
University rule Istanbul Technical University's 2026–2027 announcement states that a student visa is mandatory both for entry into Türkiye and for registration at ITU.
Needs confirmation Some nationalities may have different visa arrangements. We could not confirm the exceptions from an official page. Ask the Turkish consulate in your country and your university before you travel.
Step by step: final registration
- Read your admission or placement letter and note the registration dates, the place (online or in person), and the document list.
- Apply for diploma equivalence early if your university requires it (see diploma equivalence).
- Get official translations of documents that are not in Turkish or English. ITU, for example, asks for notarised or officially certified Turkish or English translations.
- Get your student visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate, and arrive in Istanbul before the registration dates.
- Pay tuition if your programme charges it. ITU, for example, states that registration will not be completed without payment and that tuition is non-refundable.
- Complete registration on the announced dates, online or at the student affairs office.
- Start your residence permit application straight after pre-registration, within your legal stay period (see the residence permit guide).
Documents universities commonly ask for
Needs confirmation This list combines published requirements from Istanbul universities. Your own university's list is the final word.
Diploma equivalence (denklik)
| Your qualification | Who issues equivalence | How to apply | Fee (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-school (secondary) diploma | Ministry of National Education (MEB) | Online on MEB e-Denklik, then show originals at a provincial education directorate or equivalence centre in Türkiye, or at the education office of a Turkish mission abroad. | No fee shown on the official page |
| University degree | Council of Higher Education (YÖK) | Online pre-application on YÖK Denklik, upload documents, then attend an appointment. | 1,250 TL per recognition or equivalence application (1 January – 31 December 2026) |
- Legal requirement For MEB equivalence, documents need an apostille, or certification by the issuing country's authorities and the Turkish mission where apostille does not apply. Notarised translations may be requested.
- Legal requirement YÖK states that foreign applicants must obtain a foreigner identification number from the Ministry of Interior before applying for equivalence.
- Legal requirement According to YÖK, foreign nationals entering non-clinical postgraduate programmes in Türkiye do not need degree equivalence; they receive a recognition letter for higher-education institutions instead.
Needs confirmation Whether you need equivalence before or after registration depends on your university. Some ask for it at registration, others allow it later. Confirm with your admissions office.
Your student certificate (öğrenci belgesi)
Once you are enrolled, you can get a student certificate (öğrenci belgesi) from your university, and e-Devlet offers YÖK student-certificate services. You will need it for the residence permit, transport discounts, and other registrations.
Recommendation Request several copies, and check the certificate shows your name exactly as written in your passport.
Common mistakes
- Travelling on an e-Visa or visa exemption when your university requires a student visa.
- Starting translations and equivalence too late, then missing the registration window.
- Following a friend's document list from a different university or year.
- Forgetting that the residence permit application must be made within your legal stay.
- Leaving health insurance until after registration and missing the General Health Insurance window.
Practical advice
- Recommendation Email your international student office before you travel to confirm the document list, the registration format, and whether originals are needed.
- Recommendation Bring originals and several copies of every document, plus scans on your phone.
- Recommendation Keep the receipt for tuition and every official fee.
