Finding a place
Renting in Istanbul without rushing
A checklist to help compare listings and reduce avoidable surprises. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Ask before you visit
- Is the advertised amount monthly, and what is included?
- What deposit, commission, and additional fees are required?
- What is the minimum contract period and the notice process?
- How much do utilities and building expenses usually cost?
- Can the agreement and payment details be provided in writing?
Inspect and verify
- Visit the property or arrange a trusted live viewing.
- Compare the address and photos with the actual property.
- Verify the person offering the property has authority to rent it.
- Do not send money under pressure before verifying the listing and terms.
- Document the property's condition and meter readings at move-in.
Think about the commute
Check the route at the time you expect to travel, including walking to and from stations. A cheap room can become expensive in time and transport if it is far from campus.
Never assume an unusually cheap listing is genuine. Verify the property, the person, the contract, and the payment recipient independently.
